Thomas Fitzosborne was born in England; he emigrated to the United States at age 20 to pursue an education in mathematics and science. His work for the U.S. government in World War I was interrupted by his service with the French Air Service in World War II, where he flew more than 100 combat missions as a B-17 pilot. He has been a professor of electrical engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University since 1946, and is a senior research scientist emeritus there.
